I’m thrilled to introduce the latest addition to our growing Minimal Collection! A big welcome to the Prouvé Table, a design that has been living in my head for several years and then slowly came to life after dozens of sketches and a few built prototypes.

I first discovered the incredible work of French architect and designer Jean Prouvé a decade ago after picking up a book about his famous demountable house. Though I fell in love with the rest of his body of work and enjoyed learning about his dedicated service as a member of the French Resistance, the house always called to me.

Like all good things, it was designed over time, with many iterations in the 1930s and ’40s, and was eventually commissioned by the French government as a way to quickly shelter people who were left homeless after the war. What struck me most about the design was its simplicity and efficiency. And how unpretentious it was.  The entire 400-square-foot house was built around the “axial portal frame” that Prouvé patented, which was the two-legged steel structure that served as the main support for the entire house (see the last few photos).

I wanted to design a table base that reflected the significance and simplicity of the axial frame, which served as the underpinning for the entire home, or in the case here, a refined hand-crafted table top. I also wanted a base that would feel as open as the house itself, a typical one-room affair, leaving plenty of room for non-intrusive seating.

This inaugural edition of the Prouvé Table features a beautiful single slab Black Walnut top and measures 106” x 36.” The elegant bow ties and patches on the top add a layer of color and originality to the overall feel, making the table truly one of a kind. This design can be custom ordered in different sizes and wood species and works just as well in the conference room as it does in the dining room.
